2008 Newfoundland Road Trip
by: Keith Myers

Okay… This is it - the big motorcycle trip of the year - My brother Eric and I riding 3000 miles roundtrip from Southern New Hampshire to Newfoundland Canada.

I had not been out on the bike as much as I would have liked, so this trip was way overdue.  However, to be truthful, although my anticipation was high, my expectations were low.  Besides just being a long ride, I was expecting Newfoundland to be boring with nondescript scenery and culture.   I’m very happy to admit that I was wrong.  The scenery is unique – lush in some areas and beautifully stark in others and the people are friendly and like to chat. An Irish accent and Newfoundland jargon make you feel a world away from the Atlantic Northeast.

Trans-Can 1 is "The Road" traversing Newfoundland and runs about 600 miles east to west. Other roads are worth exploring, but expect to come out the same way that you went in. For me, the Northern Peninsula was the highlight of the entire journey- well worth the trip.

Travel to Newfoundland takes a little bit of advanced planning.  Unless you have an unlimited time schedule, your itinerary will be set by your ferry shuttles to, and from, Nova Scotia.  Also, if you're traveling by motorcycle, your daily plans may be affected by the weather.  Expect that it will rain….
