This featured ride is from the Moto-Maps® New Hampshire booklet and is reported by the company’s web designer and product advisor, Eric Myers
This ride makes a large figure eight through New Hampshire’s White Mountains and North Country, with a brief stretch running along the border in the state of Maine. The ride begins in North Conway, New Hampshire, an historic resort town complete with a restored 19th century train station and a main street boasting an old fashioned “Five and Dime” as well as many other unique shops. Heading north, you’ll wind your way up through Pinkham Notch where with each bend in the road you’ll be treated to the panoramic beauty of the White Mountains and the splendor of Mount Washington. This route brings you past the base of the Mount Washington Auto Road. If you’re feeling adventurous, you may want to travel the 7.6-mile gravel road to the summit of New England’s highest peak.
Continuing past Mount Washington to Gorham, you’ll come to the crossroad in our figure eight and head west. Here you will cross through the northern-most section of the White Mountains until you reach the boarder of Vermont and the Connecticut River. Turning north, you’ll bend your way along the river until you reach Colebrook, New Hampshire, the northern most point on our route. As you approach Colebrook don’t forget to stop at the Shrine of Our Lady of Grace for the Blessing of the Bikes, a monument dedicated to all motorcyclists and their safe travels. Leaving Colebrook you’ll twist our way through Dixville Notch, passing The Balsams, an historic grand hotel in the European tradition on the shores of Lake Gloriette. The route continues eastward through the North Country’s rugged landscape and out again, to the edge of the Androscoggin River and the town of Errol, New Hampshire.
You will follow the sift, clear water of the broad Androscoggin River, a river that was once jammed with logs a century ago when New Hampshire was a major supplier of timber. This leg of the route offers the rider a choice to make either a spirited run or leisurely ride down the sixteen miles back to Gorham. Heading east again, you will pass through the Shelburne Birches, a renowned grove of white birches that serves as a Memorial Forest to U.S. Service Veterans. Now you’ll cross into Maine and turn south for the final leg of your ride. This final leg offers you a slower pace, as you weave between Maine and New Hampshire, on a wooded, single lane road that opens up to the scenic beauty of Evans Notch. Now passing by rolling New England farmland, you turn into New Hampshire for a final time and roll back to North Conway for a bite to eat and a good night sleep.
Lodging, restaurants and fuel are available along the route – but think about planning ahead for lodging during the peak seasons. One recommended access point to this ride is via the famous Kangamangus Highway (route 112) off of interstate 93 in Lincoln, New Hampshire. However, if you wish to avoid interstates all-together, other rides in the Moto-Maps® New Hampshire booklet offer alternative routes into and around North Conway.
